Skills & Experience Needed for Welder and Fitter Positions
Successful candidates for these positions should have 1–3 years of welding or fabrication experience and the ability to read and interpret shop drawings, travelers, and specifications. A strong understanding of welding symbols and the ability to pass process-specific weld tests are essential. Welders must be able to produce consistent welds in flat, horizontal, and vertical positions and be familiar with various welding processes, including FCAW, MIG, Stick, TIG, MCAW, and Submerged Arc.
Fitters should be comfortable using torches to cope beams, bevel plates, and heat-straighten components. Both roles require crane and forklift experience to move parts across the shop, along with basic math skills and the physical ability to handle materials safely. A trade certification or equivalent experience is preferred but not required, as on-going training is available through Custom Engineering.
